It's been such a long time since I've last blogged. (Well, I always say the same thing when I stopped blogging for a while) Maybe I've been lazy or tired to lift my fingers. Chinese New Year is just over, but practically not over because the stipulated period in the lunar calendar is 15 days.

So what makes me wanna blog again out of sudden??? Just wanna share a reflection journal written by me as ordered by my lecturer. Many a times when I write my blog, I often write out my feelings towards my profession. However when I'm asked to write a journal, I dunno what to write except to think of summarizing all my blog entries!!! Haha... I guess my lecturer will fall asleep. Here's what I wrote.....

"Nursing is known as a “rewarding profession”. During my attachment, my satisfaction and confidence in doing assessments, performing IV therapy, learning new diagnosis & medications, and relating to patients and their families confirmed my career choice.

The overall satisfaction I’ve gained during the attachment is the appreciation from patients. I don’t expect rewards but their gratitude towards my care is something which money cannot buy. There are few instances where some of them came up to me to shake my hand to express their appreciation and compliments. These golden words simply boost up my morale and make me want to better myself even more.

After so many rounds of clinical attachment, I especially loved my final lap of attachment because I am able to perform a wide variety of duties such as admission, wound dressing, IV therapy, NG tube feeding. I accepted each as a new challenge and mastered all of them with confidence.

As for special postings, I simply love the paediatrics and nursery posting because nursing these innocent and lovable children can warm my heart and bring a smile to my face. I’ve witnessed 3 normal deliveries at NUH and I must say that a child birth is so amazing and magical. I feel so proud for the tired mother and happy for the delighted father.

There was one baby girl which I still couldn’t forget about her. Her name is Edeline. She was transferred to the paediatrics ward after being cared for in the ICU for a month. When I first saw her, my heart almost dropped because at such a young age she was put on tracheostomy and PEG. In fact, she was barely 1 year old. She was a beautiful baby with double eyelids and she was called the “princess” of the ICU due to her incessant crying for attention.

I’ve set my eyes on her the moment she became my patient. I didn’t know I’ve taken extra care and attention for her until I forgot other duties. She made me want to protect her from any harm because she didn’t have her parents or relatives always by her side unlike other children. My heart would go out to her whenever she cries. Perhaps due to my unconditional love and care rendered to Edeline, the EN and some of my peers have noticed that she was my favourite patient. On my last day at paediatrics ward, I gave her a last look and wished her well. However I still receive updates of Edeline from my other group mates who were posted there after I’ve left for nursery ward.

I’ve learned to work closely with the staff and have been truly enriched by their competence and expertise, as well as the affiliations we have shared.

I believe there are many good staff in ward 12 which I’m currently in and I decided EN Marissa was one of them She struck me as a woman utterly lacking in ordinary resentments, sure of her responsibilities and blessings, and unwavering in her administering of care. I looked upon her as a role model which I would like to follow when I pass out as an Enrolled Nurse."

Touched??? Credits should go to the book called "Chicken Soup for Nurses Soul" because most of the stories have already voiced out my feelings. I merely extracted a few sentences out & piece them together into my own work.

This coming week shall be my last week as a student nurse in AH, soon I'll be going over to NUH for the final 2 weeks before I complete my course. I've already come this far & to say goodbye to my school mates & lecturers gives me a pang of sadness.
